Hailing Island, located in the Greater Bay Area of China, is about 3.5 hours' drive from Hong Kong.
Spanning 16.9 square kilometers, it welcomes around 1.2 million visitors annually, drawn to its pristine sandy beaches and fresh seafood.
Key highlights of the island include Dajiao Bay, a National AAAA Level Scenic Area with soft sands and numerous recreational activities, and Shili Silver Beach, known for its wide shoreline and historical significance. At Shili Silver Beach, a museum is under construction to showcase the artifacts from the 600-year-old ship "Nanhai No. 1," offering insights into China's maritime history.
Visiting in July for a three-day stay, we chose a holiday apartment with a sea-facing balcony in a mixed development that included villas, restaurants, swimming pools, and a supermarket. The peaceful atmosphere was surprising, given the limited crowds, while restaurants remained open and offered extremely affordable meals, such as six freshly prepared seafood dishes for just RMB98.
Shili Silver Beach impressed with its spaciousness, clean surroundings, and various activities like all-terrain vehicle rentals and watersports. Lifeguards were present, and designated swimming areas were clearly marked. A private section of the beach required a small entry fee. Nearby stalls offered water toys, floats, jackfruit, drinks, and other snacks. The drive to the island offered scenic views, with one route running close to the water and an alternative elevated highway providing a smoother return journey.
A standout option for visitors is the Crowne Plaza Hailing Island, a luxurious five-star hotel overlooking Shili Silver Beach. Surrounded by greenery and offering panoramic views of Huashan Mountain and the South China Sea, it provides a relaxing stay for those seeking a premium experience. For a more budget-friendly alternative, we booked a well-located holiday apartment with stunning sea views and easy access to a nearby beach and supermarket.
